Free education of choice, absolutely. Free university is simply another societal bias which needs to be quashed. Free it all up.

I'm so with you on this one. Great list. I've been out of school 10 years now and I'm STILL paying off student loans. I keep thinking I'm done, but somehow I still have a while to go. Can't figure that one out.

Hi. I discovered your blog via TT blogsite. Nice to meet you! And, I agree with many of your points re: eliminating tuition fees. I live in the US, and, the average college leaving debt is $25,000! That's outrageous. Especially when most young people, after spending mad money for college, cannot even obtain a job paying $50,000. My dear mother says that all of the time. In the state where I was born, raised and reside following a ten-year hiatus out of the state, the state's flagship university costs $20,000. There's something wrong when a state institution costs that much.

You go, girfriend! And, I will be visiting your site again.:)

Hmm. Let's break these down one by one.

13. Women will end up paying more for their education than men because of student loans, interest, and of coure the wage gap. We take longer to pay it off because of the wage gap - therefore we pay more. How about we just get rid of the middleman and eliminate tuition?

Why not fight for eliminating the fact that women earn 82 cents on the dollar compared to men for equal work. That to me should be the real fight here; you have not really provided an argument for no tuition. Next.

12. Imagine graduating from university with debt of minimum $24,000. That’s the Canadian average. Now lets say - no debt! No tuition!

Education is an investment in your future. It costs something now but it means higher salaries, more job security, and better benefits. Spend some now to get some later. Next.

11. What do we consider our priorities? Lowering taxes… OR - EDUCATION!!!! (Let’s go with Education)

I completely agree here. We need to invest more in education, research and development, technology, and productivity enhancement. In fact, this should be the next great national project (the environment can and should be linked into it).

10. Tuition fees are the primary reason students can’t afford university or college.

Fine but does this mean there shouldn't be tuition or rather that we need to ensure that those who attain high grades get to go irregardless of income (performance dependent grants work too).

9. Lower tuition fees = more government funding = higher quality education.

Wrong. More money = higher quality education. Eliminating tuition eliminates a revenue source for our already stretched universities.

8. We all benefit from an educated society.

Fully agree here though not everyone can nor should attend a post-secondary institution (I am including college here too).

7. We can afford it. All that oil money has to be good for something.

Agreed. Instead of additional tax cuts we should change our priorities as I said earlier in agreement with another point.

6. This province (Newfoundland and Labrador) has one of the highest illiteracy rates in Canada.

That's an argument to improve primary and secondary schooling. University isn't going to help the illiterate.

5. Free tuition and needs-based grants would eradicate student debt. Imagine graduating debt-free!!

Imagine the culture of entitlement we create! What is wrong with actually investing in your future? Universities are starved for cash as it is.

4. No fees mean more people can afford to learn.

Do we want university to become a mass commodity for everyone? Where is the line drawn between letting more people and ensuring that it is the best who get in so the degree still has meaning?

3. Since 1990, tuition fees have increased more than three times faster than inflation.

New technology is expensive. Universities need that and more to ensure a high level of quality and competitiveness.

2. It worked for Ireland.

And failed in Germany.

1. Tuition was free when Danny Williams went to university.

Women couldn't vote once upon a time too; shall we go back to that too? I didn't think so. Appeals to the past are logically fallacious and generally don't work.
